TikTok Teams Up with MercadoLibre: Short-Video Traffic Finally Adds Up

This summer, something of moderate significance happened in the Latin American e-commerce circle. In June, Mercado Libre, the largest e-commerce platform in Latin America, and TikTok first disclosed their cooperation intention in Cannes. By August 10, Mercado Ads, the advertising business under Mercado Libre, officially launched an advertising product called Social Commerce Video Ads with TikTok.

It sounds like an ordinary advertising partnership, but if you look closely at the details, it is actually quite interesting.

What exactly is this cooperation doing?

Simply put, it connects TikTok's short-video feed with Mercado Libre's real shopping data into the same advertising system.

Previously, when brands advertised on TikTok, they could see views, likes, comments, and at most a click-through rate. But where users went after clicking the ad, whether they searched for the brand, whether they added items to the cart, and whether they eventually bought anything—this information was basically disconnected.

Now it is different. Ads are exposed on TikTok, users search, add to cart, and place orders on Mercado Libre, and Mercado Ads is responsible for linking the data from both ends. A journey whose second half was previously invisible can now be tracked.

Compared with ordinary social media advertising, the biggest highlight of this cooperation is the inclusion of Mercado Libre's transaction data. Brands can filter target audiences based on consumers' purchase records, search history, and payment behavior on Mercado Libre. In other words, a TikTok video is no longer just broadly pushed to everyone watching videos, but is more likely to reach people who are actively buying related categories.

Why does Mercado Libre need to go external?

Mercado Libre is not short of orders. In the second quarter of this year, its net revenue and financial income reached $10.169 billion, up 50% year over year; merchandise transaction volume reached $21.9 billion, up 44% year over year. The platform sold nearly 800 million items, with more than 89.3 million unique buyers.

But what is really growing fast is the advertising business. In the second quarter, Mercado Libre's advertising revenue grew 62% at constant exchange rates, and its share of the Latin American digital advertising market exceeded 10% for the first time. In U.S. dollar terms, revenue grew 73% year over year.

The fact that advertising revenue growth outpaced merchandise transaction volume growth shows that Mercado Libre is no longer satisfied with making money from commissions, logistics, and financial services—it has begun turning consumers' search, browsing, and purchase behavior into a business as well.

But to continue expanding its advertising business, Mercado Libre faces a practical problem: shopping decisions often happen before consumers even open an e-commerce platform. According to a survey, 57.8% of respondents had discovered a product on TikTok and directly completed a purchase. Although this data comes from TikTok's own statistics, it does reflect a trend—short video is shifting from a content gateway to a shopping gateway.

If Mercado Libre's ads can only appear after users open the app, it misses the moment when consumers first see the product. At the same time, ad placements within the platform are ultimately limited. Integrating with TikTok allows Mercado Ads to deliver ads to the places where consumers are scrolling videos, without having to build its own short-video platform.

This is not a model invented by anyone.

This approach of "e-commerce data + external traffic" is not Mercado Libre's first. Amazon is also using Amazon DSP to apply its accumulated shopping, browsing, and streaming data to ad placements on its own site as well as third-party websites and apps.

To put it plainly, e-commerce platforms are no longer just selling an ad slot on a search results page, but the ability to precisely find consumers using real shopping data.

For Mercado Libre, TikTok is its first stop for selling advertising business outside its platform. For TikTok, Mercado Libre is its first Latin American partner to prove the commercial value of short video with real orders.

The two companies each get what they need, but behind this is the same trend: e-commerce platform ads are no longer just selling on-site placements, but selling the ability to find people with shopping data; social media traffic is no longer just selling exposure, but selling attention that can be tracked to transactions.

This deal is not big—after all, it is just the launch of an advertising product. But it is not small either—it connects two systems that previously operated independently, allowing brands to finally calculate a clear account: how many real transactions did this video I invested in on TikTok actually bring?
